Press Surprise me and it will pick a random last name batch with random settings. In Real mode every surname comes from the US Census Bureau’s 2020 surname file, which lists each last name shared by at least 100 people in the United States. Each card shows the name’s national rank and how many people have it, so you can choose something familiar or something rare. It also works as a last name generator with meanings: cards show what a name means and its type, such as occupational or patronymic, whenever standard surname dictionaries confirm it. Tap a card to see its full details, including the ethnicity mix of the people who have it.

Pick an origin chip to switch from American names to one of 27 other cultures, from Irish and Italian to Japanese and Nigerian. Switch to Fantasy and it becomes a family name generator that invents names in seven styles instead. Need a full name? Choose a gender preference and the tool adds a first name to every last name, or try the random first and last name generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I generate a random last name?

Press Generate names at the top of this page. You get 20 new random last names each time, and none repeat until you’ve seen them all. Use the filters to choose the origin, how common the names are, the first letter or the length.

Are the generated last names real?

In Real mode, yes. US names come from the Census Bureau’s 2020 surname file and show how many people have them. Names from other cultures come from open surname lists. In Fantasy mode the names are invented and labelled as invented.

What is the most common last name in the United States?

Smith, with 2,369,644 people in the 2020 Census. Johnson and Williams come second and third.

Can I use these names in my book or game?

Real surnames are shared by thousands of families, so anyone can use them in fiction. Invented fantasy names are free to use too. If you plan to use a name as a brand or product name, check trademarks first. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is the difference between a surname and a last name?

In the US they mean the same thing: the family name. It’s called a last name because it usually comes last. In some cultures, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Hungarian, the family name is written first.

Do the names come with meanings?

Many do. About 2,200 surnames, including 866 of the 1,000 most common US names, show a confirmed meaning and type. We don’t guess: if a meaning isn’t confirmed, the card says so. Browse surnames by origin to see them by culture.

Can I save and share the names I like?

Yes. Tap Save on any name to keep it, or Share to send it. Open Saved to see your list, download it as TXT, CSV or JSON, or copy a share link that opens the same list on another device. Saved names stay in your browser.
