Random first and last names in one click
This first and last name generator pairs a real first name with a real last name. First names come from US Census first-name data, and most are marked female or male based on how they’re mostly used. Set Gender preference to Female, Male or Any, then press Generate names. Every result shows the full name, a flow score for how well the two parts sound together, and the surname’s rank in the US.
Pick an origin chip to pair first names with surnames from another culture: Irish, Spanish, German, Korean and 23 more. For a ready-made list of a thousand full names to copy or download, open 1000 random names.
Male and female first and last names
- Female first and last names: set Gender preference to Female. You’ll get names like a familiar first name paired with a surname of the rarity you choose.
- Male first and last names: set it to Male.
- Any: a mix of both, which suits a classroom roster, a cast list or test data.
- Unique first and last names: set How common to Rare or Very rare for surnames few people share.
When a name and last name generator helps
- Writers naming a cast of side characters. Our character last name generator page has tips on making names feel real.
- Game masters who need a believable NPC name on the spot.
- Designers and developers filling mock-ups and sample data with realistic names.
- Parents testing how a baby’s first name sounds with the family surname. The first-name match tool does exactly that.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real people’s names?
They’re real first names and real surnames, combined at random. A combination may happen to match a real person, as common names do, but the tool doesn’t use any list of real people.
Can I choose the first letter or length of the last name?
Yes. Use Starts with and Name length. They apply to the last name.
Can I download the names?
Save the ones you like with the heart, then download them as TXT, CSV or JSON from Saved. Or use Copy all to copy the whole batch.
Can I generate a middle name too?
Not yet. You can generate a second batch and borrow a first name as the middle name.
