How Polish last names work
- -ski and -cki usually come from a place: Kowalski is linked to a place named after a smith (kowal).
- -wicz means son of, like the English -son: Adamowicz is son of Adam.
- -czyk and -ak often mark a son or a small or young one: Adamczyk is linked to Adam, and Nowak comes from nowy, new (a newcomer).
- Gender changes the ending. In Poland a woman from the Kowalski family is Kowalska.
