Tap a name card for details. Real surnames, counts and ethnicity shares: US Census Bureau, 2020 Census surname file. First names: 2020 Census first-name file. Other origins: open surname lists for each country, checked by hand. Fantasy names are invented by this tool.
Unique last names that are still real
Made-up names can sound made up. These don’t, because every one of them is a real surname from the 2020 US Census, shared by only a few hundred people across the whole country. Think of it as a rare last name generator: How common is set to Very rare for you; switch it to Rare for names that are a little more familiar. Each card shows exactly how many people have the name.
How rare is rare?
The Census list includes every surname with at least 100 people. Names in the Very rare setting are shared by fewer than 600 people each, in a country of over 330 million. For comparison, Smith is shared by 2,369,644. Tap any card for its rank, or check your own name with how common is my last name.
Unique surname ideas for characters and pen names
- Filter by ethnicity to find rare names that fit a character’s background.
- Use Starts with to find a unique name with the initial you want.
